Noka Camp: five stars, off the grid.

How we automated a luxury tented camp on a remote wilderness reserve — and kept it running, beautifully, ever since.

The brief

Lepogo Lodges' Noka Camp sits inside the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve, Limpopo — hours from the nearest supplier, with no grid power and a five-star guest expectation. The brief: complete automation of lighting, climate, shading and energy across the villas, engineered to run unattended and be supported remotely.

The solution

A KNX backbone, chosen for its decentralised resilience: every device intelligent in its own right, so no single failure can darken a villa. Solar generation and battery storage manage the camp's entire energy budget — including South Africa's first solar walkway, which generates power overhead while lighting the boardwalk between villas. Hager featured the project as an international reference installation.

The result

Guests experience nothing but comfort — lighting that follows the evening, climate that holds steady through highveld extremes — while the technology runs silently on sunlight. Years on, the systems are still maintained by our team, remotely and on site.
